Waffling around

Looking for a way to feed your family during the Nine Days?

How about… waffles?

All you need is one (or, in our case, two) of these:

And a good recipe:

My Father’s Waffle Recipe

Note: For best results, prepare only a single recipe at a time. When the entire Shiputzim family is home, we usually end up making about 3-4 separate recipes per meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 3 tsp baking powder (i.e. one envelope for my Israeli readers)
  • scant ½ tsp salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1¼ cups milk
  • ¼ cup oil

Directions

Combine dry ingredients and set aside. Beat eggs, and add milk and oil. Pour liquid mixture into dry ingredients, and mix.

Pour 1 cup of batter (we use a soup ladle’s worth) into machine. Bake each waffle for 5 minutes on the highest setting. (YMMV, depending on your specific waffle maker.)

  1. Don't forget to mention that soy milk can be substituted for the real milk. It really is fine for those (like me) who can't have milk. HTH

  2. If you don't put sugar in the batter, what do you put on the waffles?
Nice to have a recipe from a father!

  3. Ew, those look good! I got my first "waffle Belgi" in Jlem a month ago. With all the works... ice cream, berries, nuts, chocolate, whip cream... You do any of that?

  4. Imma - Thanks for the note!

Ilana-Davita - Ideally, maple syrup. But since that's exorbitantly expensive here, we use pancake syrup (i.e. imitation maple syrup) instead.

    Yosefa - That sounds delicious!

  5. Don't they sell frozen waffles in Israel?

  6. Raizy - They do, but homemade waffles taste much better (and are much, much cheaper).

  7. Plain or even fruit yogurt is good in waffles and pancakes. Personally, it's all too sweet for me. I don't eat all those carbs.
9 days are vegetable soup and fish here.

  8. Batya - At least waffles aren't fried, in contrast to pancakes or French toast.

Jameel - LOL! I had a feeling you would appreciate this one... ;-)
